According to the World Health Organization estimates, individuals with disabilities comprise 10% of the population in developed countries and 12% of the population in developing countries. Saudi Arabia has undergone rapid economic development in recent decades, which has been reflected in improved health care services and decreased child mortality so that children with disabilities are more likely to survive dental education.

Earlier studies have revealed that dentists did not believe that their dental education prepared them to manage patients with SHCNs. In the United States, 50% of dental school deans stated that adding a curriculum for treating patients with special needs was not a major priority at their schools. Most graduates from dental schools did not feel competent to treat patients with SHCNs. In addition, most dental residencies’ directors indicate that their residents require more training with these patients. Less than one-half of dental programs in the United States provide hands-on experience with disabled patients. Patients treated in dental schools typically do not require complicated behavior management techniques. Therefore, graduate dentists will continue to treat the same type of patients they were treating in dental school.
