The Role of Vitamin D in Pediatric Orthopedics

Vitamin D is an essential component of bone metabolism in the growth and development of the pediatric skeleton, which can be acutely affected by changes to the body’s vitamin D, calcium, and phosphate levels, resulting in pathologic conditions such as rickets or fractures.

Bone homeostasis can be acutely affected by changes to the body’s vitamin D, calcium, and phosphate levels, resulting in pathologic conditions such as vitamin D–dependent rickets, osteoporosis, and a predisposition to fractures.

Within the last decade, multiple studies have demonstrated the potential health benefits of vitamin D supplementation, including improved bone health, reduced fracture risk, protection from autoimmune disease, and decreased cancer risk.

A review of the Medline database from the 1950s through 2017 shows that the number of studies related to both vitamin D and pediatric orthopedics has been exponentially increasing over the past 20 years. The intensified recognition of the role of vitamin D has therefore become an area of concern as modern dietary and lifestyle changes affect both the intake and production of vitamin D. As such, a recent study has demonstrated that the number of US adults taking vitamin D supplements has increased significantly over the past 2 decades. Vitamin D deficiency is also a common concern in pediatric populations, significantly affecting at-risk populations such as non-white patients, obese patients, and patients with chronic illnesses such as cystic fibrosis and chronic kidney disease. This finding is especially troubling because the percentage of obese children is increasing. Additionally, a poor diet and minimal sun exposure increase a child’s risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Journal of Orthopedic Oncology offers information in all aspects of primary, malignant tumors. Osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, chordoma, and soft tissue sarcomas etc., it also deals with diagnostic methods, therapeutic approaches, clinical, laboratory research and reconstructive techniques.

The Journal includes a wide range of fields in its discipline to create a platform for the authors to make their contribution towards the journal and the editorial office promises a peer review process for the submitted manuscripts for the quality of publishing.

The Journal uses Editorial Tracking System for quality in review process. Editorial Manager is an online manuscript submission, review and tracking systems. Review processing is performed by the editorial board members of Orthopedics & Oncology or outside experts; at least two independent reviewer’s approval followed by editor approval is required for acceptance of any citable manuscript. Authors may submit manuscripts and track their progress through the system.

The Journal Considers Research article, Review articles, editorial, letter, case reports, short communications, original articles from leading scientists and scholars around the world in all areas of related to Malignantosteoid, Multilobular tumour of bone, Chondrosarcoma, Chordoma, Osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcomaetc., which come under the scope of the journal.
